Cristofor Columb

Cred ca toata lumea stie cine este Cristofor Columb, asa ca o sa va povestesc mai multe despre statuia lui din Barcelona si nu despre el.

Monumentul Cristofor Columb a fost construit in 1888 in onoarea renumitului explorator si descoperitor al Americii. Acest monument consta intr-o columna inalta ce are deasupra sa o statuie a lui Columb. In Placa de la Porta de Pau (Piata Potii Pacii) se gaseste o columna din fier ridicata pe un piedestal de piatra cu statuia lui Cristofor Columb deasupra. Monumentul inalt de 60 de metri cunoscut sub numele de Monument a Colom a fost proiectat de arhitectul catalan Gaieta Buigas i Monrava pentru expozitia universala din 1888. Constructia monumentului a inceput in 1882 dar datorita unor probleme financiare a fost finalizata chiar inaintea inceprerii expozitiei.

Monumentul a fost amplasat in locul in care Cristofor Columb a revenit in 1493 dupa ce a descoperit America cu un an inainte. Se presupune ca exploratorul s-a nascut in Genova, Italia. Initial s-a mutat in Portugalia si mai tarziu in Spania. Cu toate acestea in secolul al 19-lea Columb era considerat catalan, iar unii istorici inca sustin ca acesta s-a nascut chiar in Catalonia, de aceea locul acestui monument din Barcelona este cu atat mai relevant.

Statuia de peste 7 metri inaltime, creata de Rafael Atche, il infatiseaza pe Columb cu bratul intins spre mare. In mod putin bizar, bratul nu este indreptat spre lumea noua pe care a descoperit-o. Piedestalul columnei este decorat foarte frumos cu un numar impresionant de figuri alegorice.

"The Boqueria Market, as it is known today, has been through many phases of life. Where this market comes from is uncertain, what we are sure of is that it was born as a travelling market, placed in the Ramblas of Barcelona. La Rambla acquired growing importance as a pedestrian lane, and the market was set in the best place to attract the large numbers of passers-by and local inhabitants.

Its location was threatened many times. In Catalonia, towns and cities have been founded around markets and the same rings true for La Boqueria. It originated as an open-air market, in front of one of the gates of the old city wall (Pla de la Boqueria) where fruit and vegetable traders from local towns and farms near by would sell their products. The spaces inside the city at that time were too small to establish a big market of the current Boqueria kind and it was necessary to set them outside the walls.

Coinciding with the dawn of the 21st century, the market has been reborn in commercial terms, and is now an international name of reference. This is shown by the great number of prizes it has won, which include the prize for the best market in the world, awarded by the World Markets Congress held in 2005 in Washington DC.

At the present time, the market is a member of Emporion, the European Association of Markets offering Excellence in Foods, and has promoted the European Project MedEmporion for the study and implementation of projects within the Mediterranean markets scope. The members of this project are the Barcelona Municipal Markets Institute, representing Barcelona City Council, the cities of Turin, Marseilles and Genoa and the Conservatory of Piamonte. "
